Here are the full lyrics for the song Armageddon Baby, which Wicked Generation plays during the Junior Social in the penultimate chapter of Sixsmiths volume 1.
Originally, J. Marc wanted to use the lyrics from Pinball Wizard by The Who, written for their rock opera Tommy. Marc decompressed the chapter as scripted, and he even went so far as to choreograph the musical number to the song, but in the end we realized we would not be able to get the rights to use the lyrics and we were forced to look elsewhere.
We spoke to at least one local musician who was keen to have us include his lyrics, but in the end I wasn’t satisfied. I wanted either a rousing metal track or something that had lyrics with some bearing on the story, and we had neither.
In the end we just used a piece that I had written a couple of years prior. I was pleased to find that the third verse fitted Marc’s pages nicely–given that he had choreographed them for Pinball Wizard–and we never looked back. Now it’s difficult to for to me to imagine the book with a real song in its place.
In the same chapter there is a callout to Ronnie James Dio. Dio passed away while I was lettering the book, and since we had referenced two of his songs I thought it was only fitting that we let Wicked Generation say goodbye to him as well. When I saw that Marc had added a panel where Julius gets to address the crowd after Cain’s big solo, I knew immediately what it was that he was saying:
“This one goes out to the immortal Ronnie James Dio.”
